SEO for small businesses in India: a 15-point checklist to show up on Google
A plain-language 15-point SEO checklist for Indian small businesses: Google Business Profile, website basics and reviews.
When someone in your city searches "cake shop near me", "CA in Andheri" or "best physiotherapist in Indore", will they find you? For most small businesses, the answer depends on a few basics that take a weekend to fix.
Here's a 15-point SEO checklist, in plain language, split into your Google profile, your website and your reputation.
Part 1: Google Business Profile (the biggest win for local businesses)
1. Claim and verify your profile. Search your business name on Google, and claim it, or create it at business.google.com.
2. Use your real business name. Use it exactly as on your board. Don't stuff keywords like "Sharma Sweets Best Sweets Shop Delhi". That breaks Google's rules.
3. Pick the right categories. The primary category matters most (for example "Dental clinic", not just "Doctor"). Add a few secondary ones.
4. Fill in everything. Hours, holiday hours, phone, WhatsApp, website, services with prices, area served and attributes.
5. Add real photos of your shop, team and work, and keep adding new ones every month.
6. Post updates about offers, new products and events. It shows Google, and customers, that you're active.
Part 2: Your website
7. A clear title tag on every page. For example: "Eggless Cakes in Jaipur · Cakely Bakes", in 30–60 characters.
8. A meta description of 120–160 characters that makes people want to click.
9. One H1 heading per page that says what the page is about.
10. A page for each main service, with real text: what you do, prices or price ranges, the area you serve and FAQs. Google can't rank a page that's only photos.
11. Mobile-friendly and fast. Most of your visitors are on phones. See why your website is slow and how to fix it.
12. The same name, address and phone (NAP) everywhere: website, Google profile, Facebook, Justdial and IndiaMART. Mismatches confuse Google.
13. The technical basics: HTTPS, a sitemap submitted in Google Search Console, no accidental "noindex", canonical links, image alt text, and LocalBusiness structured data.
Part 3: Reputation
14. Get genuine Google reviews regularly, and reply to every one. Read how to get more Google reviews (the right way) and how to reply.
15. Get mentioned locally. Local directories, your trade association, local news, and suppliers or partners who link to your website.
What not to do
- Don't buy "1,000 backlinks for ₹999" or fake reviews. They can get you penalised.
- Don't create several Google profiles for the same business, or fake addresses.
- Don't expect results in a week. Local SEO usually takes a few weeks to a few months to show clearly.

The bottom line

- a complete Google profile;
- a clear, fast website with real text;
- steady genuine reviews.
