Why is my website slow? 7 common reasons and how to fix them
How to measure website speed properly with Core Web Vitals, the 7 most common reasons small business websites are slow, and the fixes.
You open your website on your phone, and it takes ages. Your customers feel the same, except they don't wait. Google's research found that 53% of mobile visits are abandoned if a page takes longer than 3 seconds to load.
Here's why small business websites are often slow, how to measure it properly, and the fixes that matter most.
How to measure speed (the right way)
Don't judge by your office Wi-Fi. Test like a customer on a mobile network:
- Run our free Website Speed & SEO Checker. It gives an SEO check, plus Google's PageSpeed score.
- Or use Google's PageSpeed Insights directly, and look at the mobile results.
Google judges speed with Core Web Vitals:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how long until the main content shows. Good: 2.5 seconds or less.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how fast the page reacts to taps. Good: 200 ms or less.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much things jump around while loading. Good: 0.1 or less.
A PageSpeed score of 90+ is good, 50–89 needs work, and under 50 is poor. Run it 2–3 times, because scores vary.
The 7 most common reasons (and fixes)
1. Huge images. A 5 MB photo straight from the phone is the #1 culprit. Fix: resize to the size shown on screen (usually under 1600 px wide), compress, and use WebP or AVIF. Lazy-load images below the fold.
2. Too many plugins or apps. Every WordPress plugin, chat widget, popup and tracker adds code. Fix: remove what you don't use, and keep one analytics tool, not four.
3. Cheap or far-away hosting. A slow server makes everything slow, and a server abroad adds delay for Indian visitors. Fix: use decent hosting with servers in or near India, or a CDN (such as Cloudflare) that serves your site from nearby locations.
4. No caching or compression. Without these, the server builds and sends the full page every time. Fix: turn on page caching and gzip or brotli compression. Most good hosts make this a single setting.
5. Heavy page builders and themes. Some themes load a whole library of features for a simple page. Fix: use a lightweight theme, or a simple custom-built site.
6. Autoplay videos and big sliders. A homepage slider with 6 large images loads all 6. Fix: use one strong hero image, and embed videos so they load only when tapped.
7. Fonts and scripts from many places. Each one is another connection to a different server. Fix: use one or two fonts, and load non-essential scripts later.
Why it matters beyond patience
- Google uses page experience as one of many signals, so a fast site helps your SEO a little, and a very slow one hurts.
- Ads cost more when the landing page is slow, because people leave before converting.
- Trust: a fast site simply feels more professional.
Speed is half the story. The other half is whether Google understands your pages. Read our SEO checklist for small businesses.
