Instagram hashtags in 2026: the 5-hashtag limit and how to pick the right ones
Instagram now allows only 5 hashtags per post. How hashtags work today, and a simple formula to pick the best 5 for a local business.
For years the advice was "use all 30 hashtags". That no longer works, or is even allowed. Since December 2025, Instagram lets you use only 5 hashtags on a post or Reel. Hashtags you put in the first comment count towards the same 5.
So the question is no longer how many, but which 5. Here's a simple way to choose them.
What hashtags do now
Hashtags help Instagram understand what your post is about and who it's for, so it can show it to the right people in search and recommendations. They're a label, not a magic reach button. Good content, a strong first line and saves and shares matter more.
That's good news for small businesses: five relevant tags beat thirty random ones.
The 5-hashtag formula
Use one or two from each group:
- What it is (topic): describes the product or service, like
#egglesscake,#keratintreatmentor#acrepair. - Who it's for or what style (niche): a smaller, specific community, like
#homebakersofindia,#bridalmakeupartistor#smallbusinessindia. - Where (local): your city or area, like
#jaipurfoodie,#puneshoppingor#gurgaonsalon. For local businesses, this tag is often the most valuable. - Your own brand tag (optional): like
#cakelybakes. Customers can use it too, and it collects all your posts in one place.
Example (home bakery in Jaipur): #egglesscake #homebakersofindia #jaipurfoodie #birthdaycakejaipur #cakelybakes
How to find good hashtags
- Search them on Instagram. Open the tag and look at the top posts. Are they similar to yours, and from businesses like yours? If not, skip it.
- Avoid the giants. Tags like
#love,#instagoodor#foodare so big that your post disappears in seconds. - Check competitors and customers. What do successful local businesses in your field use? What do your customers tag?
- Never use banned or unrelated tags just because they're trending. It can hurt your reach.
- Rotate. Don't paste the exact same 5 on every post. Pick the 5 that fit this post.
Where to put them
At the end of the caption, after your call to action, or woven into a sentence ("Our #egglesscake is back!"). Either is fine. Just remember that the comment and the caption together share the 5-tag limit.
Common mistakes
- Copy-pasting 30 old hashtags. Extra tags are no longer allowed, so pick the 5 that matter.
- Only broad tags.
#fashionwon't bring you buyers in Lucknow.#lucknowboutiquemight. - Hashtags instead of a caption. A hashtag list isn't a caption. Write a real hook and call to action first. See Instagram captions that sell.
