Instagram captions that sell: a simple formula for small businesses
The Hook-Value-Action formula for Instagram captions, with copy-ready examples for shops, salons and clinics.
People scroll Instagram fast. Your photo or reel stops them, but your caption decides whether they comment, DM you or just keep scrolling. For a small business, a good caption is the difference between likes and orders.
Here's a simple formula that works for shops, restaurants, salons, clinics and service businesses, with examples you can copy.
The H-V-A formula: Hook, Value, Action
1. Hook (the first line). Instagram shows only the first line or two before "…more". Make it count:
- ask a question: "Still searching for the perfect Diwali gift?"
- make a bold claim: "The softest eggless cake in Jaipur. Yes, we said it."
- name a problem: "AC making noise again this summer?"
2. Value (2–4 short lines). Give the reader something useful or interesting:
- what's special about the product: material, size, taste, who it's for;
- the price, or "from ₹999" (people hate asking for prices);
- a quick tip, story or behind-the-scenes moment.
3. Action (one clear call to action). Tell them exactly what to do next:
- "DM 'HAMPER' to order."
- "Tap the WhatsApp link in our bio."
- "Save this for your next trip."
- "Tag a friend who needs this."

Tips that make a big difference
- Write the way your customers talk. If they speak Hinglish, write Hinglish: "Weekend plan? Pizza toh banta hai 🍕".
- Use line breaks and 2–4 emojis, not 20.
- Mention your city or area. It helps local customers find and trust you.
- Answer the questions people DM you most (price, size, delivery) in the caption itself.
- Use a few hashtags, not many. Instagram now allows only 5 per post. Read how to pick the right hashtags.
- Reply to every comment and DM quickly. A great caption is wasted if the DM sits unread. Our WhatsApp auto-reply guide covers the WhatsApp side.
Write captions in seconds
Out of ideas? Tell our free Instagram Caption & Hashtag Generator what the post is about. You'll get 3 captions (short, story and sales), plus the 5 best hashtags, in English, Hindi or Hinglish.
The bottom line
Hook them in the first line, give them a reason to care, and tell them exactly what to do next. Do that on every post, and your Instagram starts bringing orders, not just likes.
