WhatsApp chatbot cost in India (2026): Meta charges, AI, setup and a real monthly bill

What a WhatsApp AI chatbot really costs in India: Meta's per-message rates after the 1 October 2026 change, AI and hosting, setup options, and a clinic's actual monthly bill.

"WhatsApp bot banwana hai, kitna kharcha aayega?" It's the question we hear most. The answers online range from "free" to "₹2 lakh", and most of them are sales pitches.

So here is the honest breakdown: what you pay Meta, what you pay for the AI, what a setup costs, and what a real business spends every month. It also covers the rule Meta changed on 1 October 2026, which many bot sellers aren't telling their customers about yet.

The 3 costs of a WhatsApp chatbot

Every WhatsApp AI chatbot in India has the same three parts. When someone gives you a single price, ask which of these it covers.

  1. Meta's message charges. WhatsApp (Meta) charges for some messages a business sends through the official WhatsApp Business API.
  2. Running costs. The AI model that writes the replies, the server the bot lives on, and someone keeping it working.
  3. Setup. Connecting your number, teaching the bot your business (prices, timings, products, FAQs), testing and going live.

1. What Meta charges (India, October 2026)

Meta charges per message, and the price depends on the message type. Approximate India rates as of October 2026:

  • Service messages (your bot's replies when a customer messages you first): the first 1,000 per month are free for each phone number. After that, about ₹0.115 per message.
  • Utility messages (order updates, appointment reminders, payment receipts): about ₹0.115 per message.
  • Authentication messages (OTPs): about ₹0.115 per message.
  • Marketing messages (offers, festival greetings, broadcasts): about ₹0.86 per message.
  • Messages customers send you: always free.

Add 18% GST on top of Meta's charges.

What changed on 1 October 2026: service messages were completely free from November 2024. Since 1 October 2026, only the first 1,000 a month are free, and you need a payment method on your Meta account. Without one, Meta stops delivering your replies after the free 1,000. If your bot suddenly goes quiet at the end of the month, check this first.

Meta revises its rates from time to time, so check the current rate card before you budget. But the shape stays the same: replying to customers is cheap; broadcasting offers is where the money goes.

2. Running costs: AI, hosting and support

  • AI usage: a good AI model costs roughly ₹0.10–₹0.50 per reply, depending on the model and how much it has to read about your business. For 1,500 replies a month, that's about ₹150–₹750.
  • Hosting: the server and database the bot runs on. Small bots cost a few hundred rupees a month; some cost nothing on free tiers, but those can be slow or sleep at night.
  • Support and updates: prices change, a new product launches, Meta updates its rules. Someone has to keep the bot correct. This is the cost people forget, and the reason most cheap bots stop working in three months.

3. Setup: three ways to get a bot

DIY on a WhatsApp platform

  • Cost: a monthly subscription (usually ₹1,000–₹5,000), plus Meta charges.
  • Catch: you build the flows yourself. Many "bots" here are button menus, not real AI that understands "kal shaam ko slot hai kya?"

A freelancer

  • Cost: often ₹5,000–₹20,000 one-time.
  • Catch: it can work well, but check who fixes it when it breaks, and whether you will own the WhatsApp account.

Done for you (an AI studio like Aimerger)

  • Cost: a setup fee plus a monthly plan that includes the running costs.
  • What you get: the bot is trained on your business, speaks Hindi, English and Hinglish, saves leads, alerts you, and lets you take over any chat. You pay more upfront than DIY, but your time isn't the cost.

A real example: a clinic's monthly bill

Take a clinic that gets about 1,500 patient messages a month. It sends 2 appointment reminders to each of 300 patients and one festival offer to 1,000 patients:

  • Bot replies: 1,500 service messages. 1,000 are free, so 500 × ₹0.115 = ₹58.
  • Reminders: 600 utility messages × ₹0.115 = ₹69.
  • Festival broadcast: 1,000 marketing messages × ₹0.86 = ₹863.
  • Meta total: ₹990, plus 18% GST = about ₹1,170.
  • AI usage: about ₹450.

Monthly WhatsApp chatbot bill for a clinic: bot replies ₹58, reminders ₹69, one broadcast ₹863, GST ₹178, AI ₹450, about ₹1,620 in total

Total running cost: about ₹1,600 a month. More than half of that is the single broadcast. Without the broadcast, Meta's charges drop to about ₹150.

Compare this with a front-desk person, who costs ₹12,000–₹18,000 a month in most Indian cities and replies only during office hours. The bot doesn't replace your staff. It handles the repetitive 80% of messages at night, on Sundays and during rush hour, so your team handles the 20% that needs a human.

What Aimerger charges

We keep it simple: one setup fee, one monthly plan.

  • Setup: starting at ₹29,999. We connect your WhatsApp Business API, teach the bot your business, and test it with you. Live in 1–2 weeks.
  • Monthly plan: starting at ₹4,999. This covers AI usage, hosting, Meta's service-reply charges and support for up to 2,000 customer messages a month. Above that, extra usage is billed at actual cost.
  • Broadcasts: billed at Meta's rates, only if you send them.

The final price depends on what the bot needs to do, for example booking appointments, connecting to your billing software or handling payments. You get a written proposal before you pay anything.

7 questions to ask before you pay anyone

  1. Whose Meta account is it? The WhatsApp Business account and number should be in your name, so you can switch providers later.
  2. Does the price include Meta's charges and GST?
  3. What happens after 1,000 service messages? Is there a payment method on the Meta account?
  4. Is it real AI or a button menu? Ask it a question in Hinglish and see.
  5. Can I take over a chat myself? And will the bot stop when I do?
  6. Will I get leads and alerts? For example, an alert on your phone when someone is ready to buy.
  7. Who updates it when your prices, timings or products change?

The short answer

A WhatsApp AI chatbot in India costs about ₹15,000–₹50,000 to set up properly. Running it costs about ₹2,500–₹6,000 a month, including AI and Meta's reply charges. Broadcasts are extra, at about ₹0.86 per message.

If you get more than 30 WhatsApp enquiries a day, it usually pays for itself with the first few leads it catches at night.
