How to choose a business name in India: a 7-step checklist
Descriptive or brandable, the phone test, trademark and domain checks: a practical 7-step checklist for naming your business in India.
Your business name goes on your board, your bills, your Instagram handle, your domain and, if you register a company, government records. Changing it later is expensive and confusing. So it's worth spending an evening getting it right.
Here's a practical 7-step checklist for choosing a business name in India.
1. Decide what the name should say
Pick one direction:
- Descriptive: says what you do, like "Delhi AC Repair". It's easy to understand and helps local search, but it's hard to grow beyond.
- Brandable: a made-up or blended word, like "Zomato". It's unique and easy to trademark, but needs more marketing at first.
- Founder or family name: like "Sharma Sweets". It feels trustworthy, but is common and hard to protect.
Most small businesses do well with a brandable name plus a short descriptor, like "Cakely Bakes" or "Voltix Electricals".
2. Make it easy to say, spell and remember
Use the phone test: say the name to a friend over a call. Can they type it into Google or Instagram without asking how to spell it?
- Keep it to 1–2 words, ideally under 12 letters.
- Avoid confusing spellings (ph/f, double letters, numbers).
- Check it sounds fine in Hindi and your local language, with no awkward meanings.
3. Think beyond today
If you sell cakes now, might you add cookies, a café or online orders later? A name like "Jaipur Cakes" can limit you, while "Crumbs & Co." can grow with you.
4. Check it's not taken
Before you fall in love with a name:
- Google search it in quotes, plus your city.
- Instagram and Facebook: check that the handle is free.
- Trademark search on the IP India public search (ipindia.gov.in), in your business class, to make sure no one has registered a similar name for similar goods.
- Company or LLP name: if you plan to register one, check availability on the MCA portal when you apply.
5. Get the domain
A matching domain (yourname.in or yourname.com) makes you look established and protects your brand online. Domains are cheap but get taken fast, so read our guide on how to choose and buy a domain in India.
6. Test it with real customers
Shortlist 3 names. Ask 10 people from your target customers which one they remember the next day, and which one they'd trust. Don't just ask your family. They'll like everything.
7. Lock it in
Once you decide:
- Book the domain and the social handles the same day.
- Make a simple logo and use the name consistently everywhere.
- Apply for a trademark if the brand matters to your business plans.
- Set up your Google Business Profile with the exact same name.
